Description

The Contractor shall provide all materials for the installation of a 140-foot walk up tower in the Bankhead National Forest in northern Alabama. The tower is to be temporary, therefore a walk-up scaffold tower will be needed. Because the research requires analysis deep within the forest minimal disruption to the land is required. Disruption comprises of soil disturbance, tree removal, and/or vehicle gas emissions. The contractor must:

  • Provide minimal disturbance to land by using a davit crane to erect the tower rather than using a traditional crane which would require the removal of additional trees and disturbing the soil.

  • Movement of tower parts and installation tools from the storage location to the installation location can only be done with a pickup and trailer. No large trucks, forklifts, or heavy lift equipment can be used at the installation location.

  • Stamped Professional Engineering (PE) Drawings

  • As built Drawings with engineer of record approved field changes or modifications (Final drawings PE stamped in hard copy “D-size”, and PDF for file).

  • Dimensions, attachment points, and loading of guy wires

  • Dimensions and loading for the platforms

  • Attachment points and loads for fall arrest, painted (white?)

  • Certification report from the engineer of record and any code official (if required) stating that the completed structure is acceptable for use.

The tower shall be designed following the requirements of OSHA 29CFR1926 Subpart L – Scaffolding, ANSI/TIA-222 H and TIA-322/: Loading, Analysis, and Design Criteria Related to the Installation, Alteration and Maintenance of Communication Structures. The tower must also meet the local design requirements of the Bankhead National Forest Service.

The tower and design documents are to be in USA measurements, standards (not metric) and English. The design documents are to be stamped/certified by a registered professional engineer having authority in Alabama.

Provide a 140-foot aluminum observation tower to include the following:

  • Frames

  • Braces

  • Connection materials (including bolts, washers, nuts, etc.)

  • Adjustable legs and base plates (provide anchor & bolt templates for foundations and guy cables)

  • Cantilever platforms at 30-foot, 120-foot, 132-foot and 140 -foot (provide allowable live load ratings for all platforms and levels {in pounds per square foot}).

  • Design and identify fall-restraint connection anchor points on tower and platforms.

  • Design and identify scientific equipment connection points on tower. Guard rails cantilever platforms with OSHA compliant railings.

  • Davit crane and hoist and tag line for erection of the tower itself

  • Lightning protection (If available)

  • Tensiometer with carrying case with the following specifications:

    1. Range 50 – 1000 lbs.

    2. Resolution: 5 lbs.

    3. Accuracy: 2% full scale

    4. Calibration: 5/16" diameter 7 x 19 galvanized cable range 500-700 lbs. with main target 600 lbs.

  • Heavy duty stair tower section

  • Handrail for all stairs or truss system for fall arrest

  • Tower base

  • Guy wires for connection to tower at 50, 60, 120, 130, 190, 210 ft. Actual length of guy wires TBD after final selection of tower location. Provide guy cable connections on tower and design loads.

  • Tower anchor type TBD after final selection of tower location

  • Turnbuckles and connections for all guy wires

  • Twenty retractable instrument booms, 6ft long or greater.

  • Provide certification proof on tower material: including poles, supports, decking, guy wires, and hardware
